Wyze Labs has developed its own version of the Smart Home Plug: The Wyze Smart Home Plug [WLPP1]. A price of $14 USD for a two-pack is meant to impress. Whenever you want your coffee maker, lamp or appliance, the Wyze Smart Plug is ready to go. Let’s get started with our review. Please note that the links provided may provide proceeds to Automate Your Life.

What is the Wyze Plug?

The Wyze Smart Plug is a white rectangular plug-in mount or outlet mount device that plugs into your 110V (not in 220V yet) outlet. It has a capacity of 10 Amps, so you cannot use it for the TV or Space Heater. It weighs approximately 5.6 ounces and is approx. 2.8 inches wide, 1.2 inches tall, and approximately 1.5 inches deep. It allows for you to plug-in two Smart Plugs into a standard size double outlet. The Wyze Plug connects to your Smart Home over 2.4 GHz WiFi via the Wyze App. It also comes with a button to ensure you can power up your device at the outlet. You do not need a hub to control the Wyze Plug, however, you will need to connect it to the Wyze App first.

What does the Wyze Plug do?

The Wyze Plug can be used to automate your devices or appliances. The Wyze Plug can be optimized through the Wyze App with a number of functions:

  • Powering up the Wyze Plug remotely: The Wyze App gives you all the features you would need to integrate the Wyze Plug into Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. You can then use the Wyze App or your voice commands to power up the device remotely.
  • Schedules: The Wyze App will provide configurations for Routines, Shortcuts, or Vacation Mode.
  • Triggers: Like most of the Wyze Family of products, you can also make the Wyze Plug respond to triggers with other Wyze products such as the Wyze Cam or Wyze Sense. You can use the contact or motion sensors or even the motion detection from the Wyze Cam to activate the Wyze Plug. You can also use IFTTT to activate the plug based on other devices in the smart home.
  • Grouping: You can also group the plugs, so you can manage a number of devices at the same time. Think about the next load-shedding situation or manage all your fans in the house at the same time.

Wyze Smart Plug: What I like about it?

  • The Wyze Plug is small, sleek, and lightweight. The dimensions make it easy to install two Wyze Plugs into a standard outlet.
  • The Wyze App gives you all the functionality to integrate with pretty much anything within the Wyze Family of products (Wyze Cam, Wyze Sense) and everything that can be integrated with Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. You can also use IFTTT.
  • Easy Setup: Fast connection and you can reconnect really easily if it happens to drop off the WiFi. It’s still functional without WiFi.
  • Economics: A two-pack of Smart Wyze Plugs cost approx. $14 to $20. That’s economical for a good Smart Plug.

Wyze Smart Home Plug: What I don’t like about it?

  • No Power Monitoring: I wish the Wyze App could provide you with how much power you were using in a day. It would also be great to see when your devices are turning on and off during the day.
  • WiFi Connection: These plugs seem to drop off the 2.4 Ghz WiFi. I don’t know if it’s a matter of capacity on the router. However, there are enough times over a couple of months where I have to reconnect the Smart Plug.

Recommendation: Wyze Smart Home Plug [WLPP1]

The Wyze Plug is one of the most economical Smart Plugs on the market. I would add the compliance to safety codes also helps drive the recommendation of this Smart Home product in your home. You would do well to think about getting a pack or Smart Plugs from Wyze. They have helped me manage my lamps, Christmas Tree lights, and an appliance here or there.
