How Can You Fix Oculus Quest 2 Black Screen Of Death?

Black screen death of your Oculus Quest 2 is quite common, it can occur for a couple of reasons, which may include hardware issues or low battery.

There’re fixes that you can do to get your screen back, keep on reading to learn about them.

Low Battery

One of the most common reasons for a black screen that users have experienced is because of the low battery in your Quest 2.

While you usually are informed by the device when it’s low on battery, there may be times when it doesn’t inform you or you fail to notice it.

So when you encounter the black screen, make sure you use the charger that came with the device and put it on the charging for at least 1 hour.

Make sure that the device is turned off before you leave it on charge.

After 1 hour, try turning it on, and if the problem still isn’t solved, the issue may be bigger, so check out other fixes and see if they work.

Hardware Issues

Oculus Meta Quest 2 is one of the most fragile pieces of technology which means it can get damaged even if it’s dropped or shaken too much. You need to be extra careful when using it, it should be held like a baby, otherwise, you might be risking hardware issues that could cost you a lot.

Because of these hardware issues, you might encounter the black screen of death. If it’s the case, you should try to contact Quest 2 Support, who will provide you with all the information and if your Quest 2 has a warranty, you might even get a new headset.

A few users experienced fogging or condensation inside the lenses of the Oculus Quest 2 during extended play sessions.

Try Rebooting

It’s possible that your device needs a reboot, when it glitches or works really slowly, it’s time to reboot. Just like that, if you have the black screen of death in your Oculus Quest 2, you need to reboot it.

Here’s what you need to do: Go press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to 60 seconds while the unit is off. After 1 minute, you need to press and hold the power button again until you see that the headset has turned on. I suggest you not do anything and let Quest 2 go through the bootup cycle for a few minutes.

Oculus support has recommended troubleshooting steps, such as performing a factory reset or ensuring that the headset is not overheating, to potentially resolve the rebooting problem.

Try A Bootloader Reboot

It’s possible that the issue hasn’t been solved with just a simple reboot, which is why you need to do a bootloader reboot. This reboot is done when the device isn’t working or there’s an error, as you are facing the black screen of death, you should try a bootloader reboot, hopefully, it should solve it.

Press and hold the power button as well as the volume down button for 15 seconds. When the 15 seconds are up, you’ll launch it into the Android operating system Boot loader menu.

Remember to release both of the buttons when you see the menu pop up, or you might skip the menu and then you’ll have to do the process again.

If none of the fixes worked, a factory reset is the last resort, keep on reading to learn the process.

Reconnect Cables

When you’re hooking up your Oculus Quest 2 to play on your computer or casting the VR action to another device, think of it like making sure your chargers are plugged in snugly. Check that all the cables connecting your headset to the computer or casting device are securely attached. It’s kind of like making sure your earphones are plugged in properly for the best sound. A loose cable can mess with your virtual reality fun, leading to issues like a frustrating black screen. So, before diving into your VR adventures, give those cables a quick check to keep everything running smoothly!

Change Display Frequency

Imagine you’re tuning up your virtual reality world, and to do that, head over to your Oculus Quest 2 settings – it’s like diving into the control center of your VR experience. Once you’re there, hit up the ‘Device’ option, just like selecting the perfect tool for the job. Now, find ‘Display’ – think of it as your own mini TV studio – and dive in.

Here comes the cool part: tweak the display frequency. It’s a bit like finding the right lighting for a great photo – set it to either 60Hz or 72Hz. This adjustment might just be the secret sauce to fix any visual hiccups, making your VR adventures as clear and vibrant as they should be.

So, fiddle around with these settings, and let your Oculus Quest 2 show off its best side. It’s like giving your virtual world a makeover – who knew settings could make such a difference? Happy exploring!

How To Do a Factory Reset Of Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 Without Using Any Device?

Devices run into many hitches and errors and sometimes the only way to solve them is by a factory reset, if the black screen of death hasn’t been solved with any of the above fixes, I suggest you go for a factory reset.

However, remember that the factory reset will delete all the data which includes all the games that you have downloaded.

Nevertheless, you can save your games by first enabling the cloud backup, here’s how you turn on the cloud backup:

  • First, you need to put on your headset.
  • Now hover over the clock which will be on the left side of the menu.
  • Open Quick Settings.
  • Then select Settings.
  • Scroll until you see System.
  • Now there you’ll see Backup, click on it.
  • Click on the toggle to turn on the Cloud Backup.

Now that you have enabled your cloud backup, let’s begin and factory reset your Oculus Quest 2 without using an Android or iOS device. Follow the steps explained below carefully:

  • Press and hold the power button and the volume down button, which will both be on the headset (keep holding them until you see it turn on).
  • When the headset turns on, the USB update mode will offer a few options and you need to choose one from them.
  • In the options, you’ll see the Factory Reset option, use the volume down button and land it on the option, then to select, use the power button.
  • Now, again use the volume down button to highlight YES, and the power button to select it. This will erase everything (except for the cloud backup data) and factory reset the device.

In the above method, we used the headset to factory reset the Quest 2, but you can also use any phone, whether it’s android or iOS.

All you need to do is download the Meta Quest app from App Store or Play Store, depending on the type of your device.

Now that the app is downloaded here’s what you need to do:

  • Open the app and log in to your account.
  • Now, go to Settings and there you’ll see Factory Reset, click on it and your device is good as new.

They’re small differences when it comes to using a phone, laptop, or headset to factory reset Oculus Quest 2, for instance:

The Final Say

  • It’s quite common that you have a black screen of death on your Oculus Quest 2, however, you can fix it if it’s caused by some small reason like a low battery.
