    Table of Contents Show More

In the rapidly evolving tech industry, brimming with new advances, the Rabbit R1 has quickly become a standout at CES 2024. It’s creating quite a buzz and drawing attention from various industries. With a reasonable price tag of $199, this compact AI device is set to revolutionize our interaction with artificial intelligence.

Imagine a device that fits snugly in your palm yet holds the power to alter your daily life – that’s what the Rabbit R1 delivers.

Scheduled for pre-orders, with anticipated shipping in March or April 2024 for the US and Canada, and a bit later for the rest of the world, Rabbit R1 is creating a buzz that’s hard to ignore.

Its compact size, equivalent to half of the iPhone 15 Pro, hints at a promising blend of technology and portability.

But behind every groundbreaking innovation, there’s a visionary mind at work.

Jesse Lyu is the driving force behind Rabbit R1. In this article, we’ll crack the intricacies of this remarkable AI assistant and dive into Jesse’s journey, discovering how his passion for technology is shaping the future of AI.

Continue reading to know more about the back story of this product and the journey of Jesse Lyu.

    A Fusion of Visionaries

Jesse Lyu’s journey with Teenage Engineering began during his tenure on the Raven Hardware project in 2017.

Fueled by admiration for Teenage Engineering’s iconic creations, he envisioned a collaboration that could redefine the boundaries of design. The challenge, however, was that Teenage Engineering wasn’t actively seeking design collaborations.

Undeterred, Jesse reached out to Teenage Engineering, and within three days, he found himself sitting with the CEO and Co-founder of Teenage Engineering. This meeting marked the beginning of a unique partnership, a fusion of minds armed with iPads and pencils.

    Sketching in Secrecy

The collaborative journey took an unconventional turn. Rather than resorting to traditional modes of communication, Jesse and the Teenage Engineering team opted for a clandestine approach—a secret Instagram account.

This private enclave became the exclusive space for sharing sketches and exchanging comments, a testament to the intuitive and creative design process that unfolded.

The secrecy of the Instagram account allowed the two groups to share ideas, iterate on designs, and maintain the purity of their creative exchange.

It was a departure from the norm, a digital canvas where ideas could flow freely without the encumbrances of formal communication channels.

Jesse Lyu on Teenage Engineering’s Board

Fast forward to 2018, and Jesse Lyu’s collaboration with Teenage Engineering deepened. He officially joined Teenage Engineering’s board of directors, solidifying his role within the company.

This integration allowed him to gain a deeper understanding of the company’s ethos and focus.

During this period, Jesse also revealed his involvement with another venture, the company called “Nothing,” which is known for its groundbreaking phones.

As co-founder of Nothing, Jesse extended his design prowess to shape the initial design language of the Nothing phone, showcasing their commitment to pushing boundaries in multiple domains.

    The Culmination

The collaborative efforts of Jesse Lyu and Teenage Engineering reached their zenith with the creation of the R1.

A device that seamlessly blends modern aesthetics with a touch of nostalgia, the R1 stands as a testament to their shared vision and creative synergy.

    Industrial Challenges for Rabbit R1

It’s important to keep in mind that Rabbit R1 pocket-sized AI assistants come with certain inherent challenges and trade-offs that can be challenging. At the same time, there may be some potential frustrations and limitations compared to smartphones.

    Screen Size and Interface Complexity

Smartphones offer a more immersive interface with larger screens, while Rabbit R1’s pocket-sized design prioritizes portability, resulting in a smaller screen size.

Users accustomed to the expansive displays of smartphones might find the smaller interface challenging for certain tasks that demand a larger visual canvas.

    Processing Power and Multitasking

Smartphones, equipped with powerful processors, are designed to handle a myriad of applications simultaneously.

Rabbit R1’s compact size may imply certain constraints on processing power and multitasking capabilities.

Users who heavily rely on their devices for resource-intensive tasks might encounter limitations in Rabbit R1’s ability to seamlessly juggle multiple applications because it is totally AI-dependent.

    Camera Functionality

While smartphones often boast advanced camera technologies, it remains unclear from the available information whether Rabbit R1 incorporates a comparable camera feature.

Users accustomed to using their smartphones for photography and video recording might miss such functionalities if not integrated into Rabbit R1.

    Typing and Text Input

Smartphones offer a variety of input methods, including touchscreen keyboards and voice input.

Rabbit R1’s compact size might present challenges in terms of text input, especially for users accustomed to the convenience of larger touchscreen keyboards on smartphones, and Rabbit uses the AI voice assistant.

Pioneering AI Assistant with an Unconventional Hardware-Savvy Approach

    R1 Hardware Development Philosophy

    • Hardware development is driven by software necessity, not personal preference.
    • The focus is on creating hardware to enhance the performance of dedicated software.

    Founder’s Expectations and Reaction

    • Founder Jesse Lyu did not expect an overwhelmingly positive response.
    • Initially, Jesse expect around 500 units on the first day and 3,000 units for the early adopters in the market.

    Business Model and Revenue Generation

    • The $200 price point is balanced between design and Bill of Materials (BOM) cost.
    • Revenue will be generated through hardware sales; margins on hardware are low, but the focus is on strategic decisions.
    • Rabbit R1 uses a large action model, not a large language model like GPT-4.

    Large Action Model Development

    • The large action model is neuro-symbolic, not based on transformer models.
    • Data collection involved real human interactions with various software applications.
    • Neuro-symbolic algorithms are designed for better interaction with different software interfaces.

Authentication and Access to Web Portal

    • Rabbit R1 users can access a web portal for authentication, service management, and feature customization.
    • Users connect services like Spotify, Uber, or DoorDash through the web portal, and authentication is done on the respective platforms.

    Ordering Process

    • Users can instruct Rabbit R1 to perform tasks like ordering food from specific services.
    • The device interacts virtually with the chosen service through a cloud-based super host.
    • User’s authentication is recognized, and Rabbit R1 renders a custom interface on the device.

    Privacy and Business Model Considerations

    • Rabbit R1 respects terms and agreements, and the focus is on creating a legitimate user experience.
    • The business model aims to collaborate with service providers rather than create spam or violate terms.

    Interaction and Confirmation

    • The device can directly trigger services for immediate actions.
    • Plans to implement a way for users to check and confirm complex or multi-step actions.
    • A portal will provide a summary and details of ongoing or completed tasks.

Our approach to finding and using information has drastically changed as a result of technological advancements. Finding the answers to our queries has gotten easier over time, from the days when encyclopaedias piled high on our bookshelves to the present day when they are transformed into CD racks. – Rabbit
