What does a Flashing White Light mean on Ring Doorbell?

The white circle on the front of your Ring Doorbell is a charging meter. When the device is working properly, you should see a solid white light on the circle.

But when the circle is flashing white, it indicates that something is wrong with your device. Either your device’s batteries are low, or the internet connection is lost.

These are the only two reasons that cause a white flash on your Ring Doorbell. You have to find out which one of these problems is creating the issue with your device. After that, it’ll be easier to solve the issue.

Let’s jump into the troubleshooting techniques!

1. Check whether the issue is with the network.

Check whether your internet connection is stable or not. Your Ring app will show that the Doorbell is offline even if it isn’t.

If you’re not certain that your device is offline due to insufficient internet, try to connect an online application or try to surf any browser.

If the issue is with your internet connection, you shouldn’t be able to connect with any online application or use a browser. It will confirm that you have an unstable internet connection.

But if you can connect to other internet applications or browsers, that means the issue isn’t with the internet connection. Instead, the problem might be with the battery of your device.

2. Reset the router.

If you’re certain that the problem is with the network connection, resetting the router can be a handy technique to troubleshoot the flashing white issue of your Ring Doorbell.

Rebooting the router helps to solve a lot of network problems. It’ll solve the IP-related conflicts that may prevent other devices from connecting.

Resetting the router is very simple. Just follow these steps:

  • Find out the Power button. Usually, it’s on the backside of your router.
  • Just press the Power button once. No need to hold it.
  • Wait for about 3 minutes.
  • Press the Power button to start the router and wait until all the services are online.

Now, check whether the doorbell is still offline and whether the flashing white circle is still there. If it doesn’t, that means your device’s problem is resolved.

3. Reset the Ring device.

Sometimes, the problem might not be with the internet connection or the battery. Like other devices, such as smartphones, PCs, or tablets, the Ring Smart Doorbell might be frozen and stop working.

If the Ring device stops working, and you’re certain that the issue isn’t with the internet connection or voltage, then you should perform a reset to get things back to normal.

The manufacturer of Ring Doorbell has attached a reset button so that you can perform a reset to the device. The resetting method differs based on the model of Ring Doorbell you’re using.

For Ring Doorbell or Ring Doorbell 2, you have to find out the orange setup button first. Press and hold the setup or reset button for about 20 seconds. After that, your device should restart.

If you’re going to perform a reset on a Ring Doorbell Pro, find out the reset button. Press and hold it for about 15 seconds. Wait another 20-30 seconds to let things back to normal.

If you see that the device is going into setup mode, then you should turn it off and let it rest for 20-30 minutes. After that, you may start to perform the reset process again.

4. Replace the old Ring Doorbell transformer.

You need to assure a 16VAC power supply to the Ring device. Otherwise, it’s not going to function at all. If the transformer of your Ring Doorbell doesn’t get the required 16 Volt AC power supply, then your Ring device will start to flash white.

The battery of Ring Doorbell gets around 6-12 months of life capacity. After that, the charging capacity starts to reduce. As a result, the battery becomes unable to supply enough power to the device.

In this case, you need to replace the older transformer of your Ring Doorbell with a newer one. Make sure the new transformer is compatible with your Ring device, which requires a minimum of 16 volts AC and at least 30 volt-amps.

Before installing the new transformer, you should turn off the power supply of your Ring Doorbell to avoid any sort of electric shock.

To replace the old transformer with a new one:

  • Find out the existing Ring Doorbell transformer.
  • Detach the three wires that link the transformer to the power supply. Unscrew the two wires from the terminals and remove the old transformer.
  • Replace the old doorbell transformer with the new one and reconnect the wires.

Now press the power button to start the Ring Doorbell and check whether the problem is resolved or not.

Contacting Ring support or customer care is always a safe option. Since they’re the manufacturer of the device, it’s easier for them to understand what types of problems the device may face.
