I bought the Philips Hue White, and Color Ambiance LED Light Bulb Starter Kit (A19) for Christmas. The Philips Hue Starter Kit comes with 3 White & Color A19 Smart LED Bulbs, 1 Philips Hue Smart Button Accessory, and a Philips Hue Hub. I installed the smart LED bulbs in my office with the smart button and Philips Hue Hub. I will focus primarily on the Philips Hue White & Color LED Light Bulbs (E26-A19) in the review. I will share my experiences using the Smart Button and how it has improved my office’s ambiance in all White and all Color.

Philips Hue White & Color Light Bulb
It’s important to note we are talking about the Philips Hue White & Color LED Light Bulbs. Philips Hue does provide a White-only bulb, but I got the White & Color smart bulbs with my starter kit.
The Philips Hue White & Color Light Bulb comes in many sizes to fit your home needs. I am reviewing the A19 bulb. The Philips Hue Color Light bulb also comes in BR30, depending on if you need some pot or floodlights in your room.
Philips Hue White & Color Light Bulb Design
The Philips Hue White & Color Light Bulbs dimensions are 2.4 x 2.4 x 4.3 inches, weighs a sturdy 14 ounces, and output 9.5 Watts. Philips Hue provides a 3-year warranty on their bulbs and estimates the Philips Hue Color Light Bulb’s lifetime to be approx. Twenty-two years or 25,000 lifetime hours (based on average industry usage). Here are some more design specifications of the Philips Hue Color Light Bulb (straight from Philips-Hue.com)
- Color Temperature: 2000K-6500K + 16 Million Colors
- Lumens Output: 800 lm @ 4000K
- Communication Protocol: Bluetooth and Zigbee
- Dimmable: Yes
- Lifetime: 25,000 hours
The Philips Hue White & Color Light bulbs operate on both Bluetooth and Zigbee. So, if you don’t have the Philips Hue Bridge/Hub, you can still manage and change the light bulbs’ colors using the Philips Hue App on your Bluetooth mobile device. The Zigbee is an excellent bonus for communication with the Philips Hue White & Color Light Bulbs. It frees up the WiFi, and lights should respond quicker than WiFi to commands. The Philips Hue Hub is required to run schedules, home and away routines, and sync with movies and music.
It’s pretty impressive that the Philips Hue Light Bulb boasts 25,000 hours for a color light bulb. Most only-white smart light bulbs (like the IKEA TRÅDFRI LED E26 11W Zigbee Smart Bulb) claim the same lifetime hours.
The Philip Hue White and Color Ambiance LED Light Bulb (A19) Features
When you open up the Philips Hue App, you’ll get a simple and easy to use interface to add your bulbs. If you don’t have a Philips Hue Bridge, you can add the light bulbs via Bluetooth. Otherwise, if you have the Philips Hue Bridge, you can add the light bulbs over Zigbee.
Once you add the light bulbs to your Philips Hue system, you can easily group the lights to your chosen room. The room’s selection helps your Google, Samsung, Apple Homekit, or Amazon voice assistant integrate those bulbs into their respective system with ease. Yes, Philips Hue has already done some of the homework to ensure your lights integrate with your favorite home automation system.
Pick your White or Color
Philips Hue has built some stable features into the White and Color Smart Bulbs. You can choose between 16 Million colors in the color wheel or between cold and warm lighting to set the ambiance. The Philips Hue App is required to change the hue of the light bulb.
These bulbs can switch between White and Color palettes quite easily. You can pick the white or color of the smart bulb separately or as a group. The Philips Hue App gives you the ability to drag and move between the 16 Million colors on a color wheel and show you the other bulbs’ colors on one screen. Philips Hue has figured out to give you a way to control and manage your light bulbs all in one place.
Choose your Scene
If selecting from 16 Million colors and hues of White was not enough, Philips Hue allows you to pick from various color lighting scenes to meet the mood in the room:
Philips Hue Color Scenes:
- Savannah Sunset (orange, yellow, white)
- Tropical twilight (purple, orange, blue)
- Arctic Aurora (dark blue, light, blue, and white)
- Spring Blossom (pink, white, grey)
Philips Hue White Scenes:
- Relax (soft yellow)
- Read (light yellow)
- Energize (bright white)
- Concentrate (brighter than Energize)
And these are just a few. You can create your scene and even allow Philips Hue to create a scene based on a photo you can import. The Philips Hue White and Color Light Bulbs will change based on the scene you make.
But this is where the scene lighting selection gets interesting. Philips Hue White & Color light bulbs change individually to meet the color spectrum required. So if you pick the Sunset Savannah, your Philips Hue White & Color Smart bulbs will decide which bulbs should change to orange, or white, or yellow to make that scene. The more bulbs you have, the broader range of light colors and white temperatures your lights will change.
You need the Philips Hue Hub to set your Philips Hue White & Color light bulbs to certain routines. The Routines are as follows:
- Home & Away (based on your mobile phone location, the lights in your home will change)
- Wake Up (lights begin to brighten up before you wake up)
- Go to Sleep (Lights start to dim over a certain period)
- Timers (You can set up that New Year’s countdown!)
If all these features were not enough, you could use customized lighting features with the Hue Labs option under the Explore setting in the Philips Hue App. Philips Hue takes you to their Hue Labs website, where you can pick customized scenes for specific holidays or exercise routines that can change based on your environment. You can change your Philips Hue White & Color bulbs to Christmas colors that change throughout the day give you the ambiance you need for the holidays. If you’re doing exercise, you change the lights to respond to the sound. There are so many options for your Philips Hue White & Color light bulbs.
Hue Entertainment for Entertainment and Gaming
With Hue Entertainment, you can orient your lights based on their location in your entertainment or gaming area. You can drag and move the lights on the user interface in the Philips Hue App. The setup is so simple. You can then sync these lights using the Philips Hue Sync (sold separately) to respond to what’s happening on your TV screen or gaming monitors. You will get a fully immersive experience! You can use the Razer Chroma device to sync your Philips Hue White & Color Light bulbs with your PC. You can also use the Light DJ App to create your own dance floor experience.
What do I like about the Philips Hue White & Color Light Bulbs?
- Lighting Options: The Philips Hue White & Color Smart Light Bulbs have opened my eyes. They have expanded my insight on what Smart Light Bulbs can do.
- Philips Hue App: The Philips Hue App is so intuitive to use. When you open the app, you might think that’s too simple. However, when you think about all the options and scenes, you have to wonder how they can make managing the Philips Hue White & Color Light Bulbs so simple. Well, they did it. If you’re operating the bulbs with Bluetooth, you’ll have fun opening up the Philips Hue App each time.
- Integration: Philips Hue has already done the work for you to integrate some of the Philips Hue commands into Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, or Apple Homekit.
- Zigbee: I think these are stellar bulbs to be operated under Zigbee. I don’t think you’ll see a ton of them on the market right now.
- Value: I think about the bulb lifetime and the number of features you get for each bulb. You’re getting tons of ambiance out of each bulb. They are built well and seem to respond quickly to commands.
What I would like better for the Philips Hue White & Color Light Bulbs
- Price: yes, the Philips Hue White & Color Light Bulbs’ price tag is higher than their competitor’s. However, as much as I would like the price to come down, I think you’re getting a stellar light bulb in your home.
Yes, that’s pretty much it for things that I didn’t like about the Philips Hue White & Color Smart Light Bulbs. I think you can see where this review is going.
Philips Hue White and Color Light Bulbs (A19) Recommendation
The Philips Hue White & Color Smart Light Bulbs fit into any lighting scenario. If you have an office and want different white shades, you can change them instantly to dim, energize, read, or work. However, if you need the lights to switch to color – it also responds and adjusts to whatever scene or lighting mood you need. I am thrilled to have bought the Philips Hue White and Color Smart Light Bulbs (A19) for my office. I think I’m going to look into expanding my Philips Hue Lighting system into the kitchen, dining, and entertainment area next! The Philips Hue App is so intuitive to use compared to most Smart Light Bulb apps, and the integration into Google Home or Amazon Alexa is so easy. You can start using your voice commands within minutes of setup. The Zigbee communication between my lights and Hub gives me a quick response time. The pricing is higher than most smart bulbs in the market, but I don’t think you can compare the value you get in having smart bulbs that bring both White and Color into one bulb. It’s hard to find a bulb that has both and operate so well.
I think it was well worth the money to buy into the Philips Hue White & Color Light Bulbs for my Smart Home. I think you’ll enjoy them too!
