Decluttering the Garage

Garages often end up packed with items we never intended to keep, leaving no space for cars.

However, with a few simple strategies, you can reclaim that space and keep it organized long-term. This presentation will walk you through each step to a tidy, functional garage, from effective purging and labeling to smart storage solutions.

Ready to take back control of your garage? Let’s get started!

Purge with a Purpose

When decluttering, two culprits are often to blame: sentimentality and the urge to save things for “someday.”

Identify items that truly serve a purpose and let go of those that don’t. Starting with big declutters, like old appliances or broken items, will help you create immediate space.

You can also donate usable items or offer them for free to make the purge easier.

Garage Storage

Cull and Sell

Sort through items quickly without second-guessing, and separate those that can be given away. Resources like local charities or online community groups make it easy to find new homes for gently used items.

Focus on items that may still serve others and give back to the community. When you declutter responsibly, you’re not only creating space but also making a positive impact.

Recycle and Trash Responsibly

Separate recyclables like cardboard boxes, plastic containers, metal cans, etc. Check with your local recycling program for what they accept.

For items that can’t be recycled, dispose of them properly:

  • Used motor oil, antifreeze, and other automotive fluids need to go to a hazardous waste facility. Many auto parts stores will accept them.
  • Batteries should go to a battery recycling drop-off.
  • Tires can often be returned to tire retailers for recycling.

For large items like an old lawnmower, refrigerator, etc., check if your local waste service offers bulk item pickup or has a drop-off site.

Boxing and Labeling Basics

Use clear plastic bins or boxes so you can see the contents and group like items together in the same bin (tools, holiday decorations, camping gear, etc). Using clear tubs also helps you see what you have without rummaging, so you can find them later conveniently.

Consider standard bin sizes that fit your shelving dimensions to make stacking easier. Label each box clearly, detailing its contents, and keep essential items within reach.

Clean Up the Space

After clearing the clutter, give the garage a deep clean. Use a shop vac for heavy debris, and wipe down walls and windows.

Consider mopping or dusting concrete floors and using a high-reach microfiber duster for cobwebs. For a lasting clean, consider a new floor coating or washable wall paint.

A deep garage cleaning removes built-up grime and stains, making the space fresher and more organized for future use. Tackle cleaning periodically for best results.

Repair floor

Consider Resurfacing the Floor

If your garage has an unfinished concrete floor, consider resurfacing for a more durable, easy-to-clean space.

Epoxy coatings add strength and style, transforming your garage into a space you can clean quickly and use for projects.

While it’s possible to DIY, hiring a professional can ensure a lasting finish. A finished floor resists stains and adds a polished look to your garage.

Install Adjustable Shelving

For flexible storage, invest in modular shelving. Choose shelving that is easy to rearrange and fit different items, from boxes to sports equipment.

Wheels on shelving units add mobility, making it easy to clean underneath. With adjustable shelving, you can adapt to future storage needs without re-purchasing large systems. This setup provides structure without limiting how you can use your garage space.

Maximize Wall Space

Add pegboards or slat walls for tool storage and wall-mounted racks for sports gear or gardening tools. Vertical storage frees up floor space and keeps items visible and accessible.

Try grouping similar items together for easy access, like keeping all garden tools on one wall. Using wall space is an efficient way to maintain order in a high-traffic, multipurpose area like the garage.

Use Overhead Storage for Rarely Used Items

If you have high ceilings, overhead racks are ideal for items you use less frequently. Store light or seasonal items like holiday decor, but avoid putting things up high that you need regularly. Keep a stable ladder handy for safe access.

Overhead storage can open up floor space, helping you maintain a neat, spacious garage that feels organized and functional.

Prioritize Accessibility for Frequently Used Items

When organizing, place items you use most often—like gardening tools or recycling bins—near the garage door or at eye level. This arrangement makes it quick to grab what you need without having to move other items out of the way.

Prioritizing accessibility helps keep daily-use items within reach while ensuring less-used items don’t interfere with your workflow.

Label Everything Clearly

Organize your garage by creating dedicated zones for different types of items. For example, set up areas for gardening tools, sports equipment, seasonal decor, and home repair supplies.

Label each zone clearly, making it easy to find what you need without rummaging through unrelated items. Having designated areas ensures everything has a home, simplifies locating items, and makes the garage more functional and user-friendly.

Designate a Workspace for Projects

If you often use your garage for DIY projects, repairs, or hobbies, dedicate a small area as a workspace. Set up a sturdy workbench, pegboards for essential tools, and easy-to-reach storage for frequently used items.

Keep this space clutter-free by limiting it to project-related tools and materials. A designated workspace not only keeps the rest of your garage tidy but also creates a productive, organized area for tackling tasks.

Enjoy The Decluttering as a Mental Excercise

Organizing your garage doesn’t need to be a chore. With thoughtful storage solutions, clear labels, and a system that makes it easy to access frequently used items, you can maintain a tidy garage long-term.

For the finishing touch, add good lighting to brighten the space and make it safer. Enjoy the satisfaction of a clean, organized garage that’s ready for whatever you need—storage, projects, or parking.
