Nuclear Fallout From Google IO 2019?

Oh boy, things took a bit of a different turn when we got off the keynote address at Google I/O 2019. Suddenly, there were emails and notices, and developers were getting hit with some information that they weren’t going to like. All this, while I/O is still going on!

#Google has told us a few things now about Nest, Google Nest, and the overall path they’re taking. Lots of this makes sense from a Google perspective, but there will be impact in the market and for the average consumer who owns Nest products.

Oh, like that Echo Dot mount? (affiliate link)

The Works With Nest program is gone, as of August 31, 2019. That means integration with Alexa and the Amazon Echo series of products is gone. IFTTT is also going to feel some pain, with the loss of not only the Google Assistant (a previous announcement), but also the loss of Nest. Android Auto’s application is also going away, but not the full Android Auto infotainment center system.

All in all, these will have impacts on your, me, and every one of us automaters. It could be ugly for you, and I’d like to know if it is going to be and what the situation is that you’ll have to deal with. It’s not all doom and gloom though, as I do think Google has to open up a little bit to the rest of the world. The reason for that is simple, they won’t have the same capabilities as Amazon does in their Echo Show and Echo Plus devices that can be triggered by ZigBee devices.
