New Android TV Chromecast Device by Google Coming Soon

It looks like Google will be releasing a new Chromecast device that will have Android TV, based on their recent FCC filing called codename Sabrina. Protocol’s Janko Roettgers found the FCC filing earlier this year (May 2020). We started writing about the Codename Sabrina device here. And now, XDA Developers released an exclusive report for the new Chromecast device here.

Sabrina will have new TV dongle Remote and new User-Interface

We can now confirm that the new ‘Sabrina’ streaming device will look similar to the Chromecast Ultra dongle, however, will be more oval in shape. Based on XDA’s report, the new Android TV device will also have a remote control. Will the remote control have a mic to control other devices? Can you speak into it to command the Google Home Ecosystem? Can you use the remote control to point and click on a device that you want to turn on? That would be something sweet! I’m just dreaming. I like to innovate and develop.

Oh ya, and they have worked on the User Interface (UI) for the new Google/Android TV display. This makes sense. If you’re going to compete with Amazon’s FireTV, you’re going to have to make it really simple to use.

XDA also says that the new Android TV/Chromecast device will come in white, black, and sandstone (kind of looks like that peach color that was painted that was the rave in the 1990’s…. [blech]). Anyhow, somebody is going to love that color. Grey would have been ok, or even the Pantone 2020 color: https://www.pantone.com/color-intelligence/color-of-the-year/color-of-the-year-2020

We’ve been waiting with Anticipation and Excitement for Sabrina

I think Google has been figuring this out for some time. Amazon just went for it and said, here: everyone should have access to streaming TV, gaming, and went right after the media streaming market with the FireTV.

Android TV was already in the game, however, specialized to TV, and Chromecast gave us access to streaming, casting media and Stadia (gaming)… so it’s great that they are going to merge this.

New Sabrina Android TV to have Low Latency Gaming Mode

Update June 16, 2020: From XDA: Looks like Google has been testing out a low-latency gaming mode, which affirms the move to make Sabrina an all-in-one media-tv-gaming-streaming device. XDA talks about Sabrina having the Amlogic S905X2 with quad-core CPU, 4 ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocking in at 1.8GHz. Ok, all we are saying here is, Sabrina’s entry is meant to at least perform some Stadia gaming as well. But it might mean that your TV might need some minimum requirements.

I wonder what happens to all the Android Boxes in the market? Do they get bricked? What about my ‘old’ Chromecast Ultra’?

In any case, it’s been a long time coming and it’s going to give a ton of customers access to the media streaming they need. Let’s hope it’s compatible (like almost everything Android), and not made to be for exclusive markets!

By the way, what will they call this new device? Will they call it Nest TV? Can’t wait.
