What Is Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell Service?

Note: This author does not receive a commission through recommended links in the content.

Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell service connects mobile phones to satellites instead of regular cell towers. Unlike prior satellite internet services, which required specialized equipment, this technology allows phones to function as if connected to a conventional mobile network.

This program covers 500,000 square miles of dead zones throughout the United States and maintains connectivity even in distant or disaster-prone places.

How Starlink and T-Mobile Made It Free (For Now)

T-Mobile collaborated with SpaceX and Starlink to establish a test program that provides free satellite texting to all U.S. mobile consumers. This limited-time service, announced in February 2025, allows users to send complimentary text messages via satellite.

However, after July 2025, this will become a paid model, with pricing based on carrier plans, although some T-Mobile customers will continue to receive it for free.

Who Can Use the Free Starlink Service?

Anyone in the United States with a T-Mobile, AT&T, or Verizon plan can sign up for Starlink’s free beta. However, not all phones support it; only some newer models are compatible.

Participants must also keep their phones updated with the latest software. T-Mobile is allowing beta testers on a rolling basis, so those who sign up early will have a better chance of getting access before the general release.

Compatible Phones for Starlink Connectivity

Not all phones can connect to Starlink satellites. Only “optimized” devices are supported, such as:

  • Apple: iPhone 14 and later.
  • Samsung: Galaxy S21+, Z Flip3, Fold3, and newer.
  • Google: Pixel 9 series and later.
  • Motorola: 2024 models onward.

T-Mobile’s website provides a complete list of supported phones, and customers must install the most recent software upgrades to connect to the network.

How to Sign Up for the Free Beta Program

To register, go to T-Mobile’s Starlink sign-up website and provide your full name, email address, and phone number. If chosen, you will receive a confirmation email with additional instructions.

Acceptance is not assured due to the restricted number of spaces available. The beta phase ends in July 2025. Thus, early sign-ups have a better chance of approval before the service becomes a commercial model.

How Starlink Works Without Cell Towers

Starlink’s satellites operate as floating cell towers in low-Earth orbit (LEO). When a user is in a region without cell coverage, their phone will automatically connect to the nearest Starlink satellite, as long as there is a clear line of sight to the sky.

Starlink offers continuous connectivity throughout deserts, forests, mountains, and even at sea, unlike standard cellular networks, which rely on towers.

Current Limitations of the Free Starlink Service

Currently, text messaging is supported, with no voice calls, multimedia messaging, or internet browsing. However, T-Mobile intends to enhance its services before the end of the trial period by allowing customers to share photographs, videos, and WhatsApp conversations.

While these upgrades are expected soon, complete voice conversations and mobile data would require government clearance and more satellite launches.

What Happens After the Free Beta Ends?

When the test period ends in July 2025, Starlink will no longer be free for most users. T-Mobile Go5G Next subscribers will continue to receive it at no additional charge.

Other T-Mobile subscribers must pay $15 monthly, while AT&T and Verizon customers must pay $20 monthly. Those who signed up for the beta will receive an early adopter discount, lowering the monthly price to $10 until February 2026.

Can You Use Starlink on Older Phones

Older cell phones cannot connect to Starlink’s satellite service, which requires LTE and eSIM capabilities. Devices like the iPhone 12, Galaxy S20, and previous variants are incompatible.

While SpaceX may expand support in the future, the service is currently available exclusively to newer devices with updated firmware. Users should refer to T-Mobile’s official list of compatible devices.

Emergency Use of Starlink’s Satellite Service

One significant advantage of Starlink is its capacity to transmit emergency text messages to 911 in places with no mobile coverage. This is particularly handy in natural disasters, distant hiking trails, and offshore boating adventures.

However, voice calls to emergency services are currently not supported. Although future updates may enhance emergency communication options, text-based 911 notifications are now the only option.

Can You Use Starlink While Traveling Internationally?

Currently, Starlink’s direct-to-cell service is only accessible in the United States. However, SpaceX has talked with major carriers about expanding its international coverage.

Future alliances with European, Asian, and Latin American carriers could enable global roaming. Consumers outside the United States cannot access Starlink’s satellite service, even if their phone is suitable.

Does Starlink Support Internet Browsing?

Starlink’s direct-to-cell service is currently limited to messaging only, with no web surfing, streaming, or social media options. The technology cannot provide a full internet connection, but SpaceX is working on future improvements.

Full-speed satellite internet access would necessitate regulatory permission and an expanded satellite network, both expected within the next few years.

What’s the Difference Between Starlink Mini and Direct-to-Cell?

There are two types of Starlink services:

  • Starlink Mini: A $499 portable Wi-Fi hotspot that needs a separate Starlink internet subscription.
  • Direct-to-Cell: Uses satellites as cell towers, requiring only a compatible smartphone with eSIM capability and no other gear.

While Starlink Mini provides full-speed internet access, Direct-to-Cell only allows text messaging.

How Starlink differs from Apple’s Satellite SOS

Apple’s Emergency SOS function enables iPhones to send emergency texts only in life-threatening situations. Users must manually turn it on and wait for a response.

Starlink’s satellite service, on the other hand, works like any other messaging network, connecting automatically when you’re out of cellular range. It is intended for regular use, not only emergencies.

Will Satellite Data Eventually Be Unlimited

Starlink’s satellite messaging is now free in beta, but bandwidth limitations may apply in the future. Expanding the service to full-speed data and video conversations necessitates additional satellites and regulatory approval.

Once the service passes beta testing, plans may include tiered data subscriptions that allow consumers to choose between limited and unlimited satellite internet alternatives.
