I am reviewing the Smart Thermostat: Ecobee3. It’s been in my home for the past three years. There are tons of features to talk about that keep you warm at night and cool during the day. If you’re thinking about your next Smart Thermostat, consider looking at the Ecobee3. It’s been on the market, but should be considered as a major competitor in managing smart home comfort.

Ecobee3 Smart Thermostat: Features
The Ecobee3 Smart Thermostat is not your basic thermostat. The Ecobee3 Smart Thermostat measures and controls the temperature, humidity and fresh air in the home. The ‘Smart’ comes from Ecobee3 ability to be programmed and controlled remotely. However, the Ecobee3 has a ton of features that enhance the ability to control the temperature and humidity in your home. The Ecobee App is quite organized and detailed. The setup instructions are found in the box and on the Ecobee3 App. The Ecobee3 works with Google, Alexa, and Homekit.
Ecobee3 Features: Eco+
At least for the past decade, society has placed increased significance on efficiency and improving energy conservation in the home. HVAC systems are now providing up to 98% efficiency. It makes sense to have a thermostat or controller that ensures your HVAC (either furnace or air conditioning) is activated at the right times of the day. That’s right. There is a science behind heating your home at night vs. day. There is even a science between cooling your home during high humidity. In any case, a Smart Ecobee3 Thermostat can determine how to keep your home comfortable and still save you up to 15% on your energy bills by activating during peak times and turning down the temperature requirement automatically. This is the Eco+ feature; the ability for the Ecobee3 to reduce your energy consumption throughout the day to maintain levels of comfort.
Ecobee3 Comfort Settings: Home, Away, Sleep, Vacation
The Ecobee3 can be set for certain temperature ranges for different activities of the day. The Ecobee3 can sense when there is no movement in the home with its InfraRed Motion sensor. The Ecobee3 Thermostat will change the temperature setpoint to the desired level when it knows you are away – this is your opportunity to set the temperature range to levels you know you don’t need (Away or Sleep Mode); therefore reducing the runtime of the HVAC in your home. Once the Ecobee3 Thermostat senses motion, the thermostat will automatically turn on begin calling for you HVAC to reach the desired temperature and humidity in the home. You can also program the Ecobee3 to function while you are on vacation. Just set the date range, and you can ensure your home maintains the temperature, humidity and has enough air exchanges to maintain proper air circulation.
Ecobee3 Weather and Status
The ‘Smart’ in Ecobee3 is also based on its connection and integration via WiFi. The Ecobee3 works with Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, Apple Homekit, Samsung SmartThings, and Hubitat Elevation. Considering all these integrations, you can ensure that your Ecobee3 Thermostat provides comfort throughout the house. However, if you have the satellite sensors, you can place these in certain rooms in the house to ensure you have a proper understanding of which rooms require more focus and attention. In my house, I have a number of rooms that have less insulation. I placed my sensors in those rooms to ensure that the Ecobee3 will turn on to maintain the average setpoint that I set for the designated floor. The sensors also act as motion sensors; The Ecobee3 Thermostat satellite sensors will only trigger HVAC activation if the satellite sensors are activated by motion. This gives you extra value to provide motion/temperature measurements throughout the house; not just at the thermostat. If the Ecobee3 satellite sensors are not working or lose connection, you will get an immediate notice to pair the sensors or change the battery. I’ve had my sensors for 3 years and they are asking me to replace the batteries. I think that’s a long time.
The Ecobee3 Smart Thermostat also tells you the weather forecast in your area. It’s pretty accurate to the zip or postal code.
One of the greatest features about the Ecobee3 thermostat is its constant status of your HVAC system. If your HVAC is not responding or if the temperature of your home is not reaching the desired setpoint over a long period of time, the Ecobee3 will email you or send you status on the Ecobee3 display. I think Ecobee3 was the first to provide this feature.
What I liked about the Ecobee3
- The installation instructions of the Ecobee3 are made simple. There are some interesting combinations of wires that need to be installed. Ecobee3 provides an extra boost if you don’t have all the wires. They provide an extra module. This is really cool of Ecobee3 to provide this. The Nest Learning Thermostat did not provide this.
- Easy to understand Menu and Display
- Motion sensing of the Thermostat and the extra satellite sensors.
- The number of options to program your Ecobee3 was tremendous – and it was made easy to change and manage throughout the three years that I have owned it.
- The cost was significantly less than the Nest Learning Thermostat.
What I did not like about the Ecobee3
- At first, the Ecobee3 was stated to work only with Apple Homekit. This changed quite fast after installing my Ecobee3.
- The display is quite small compared to the size of the device. This does not take away from any of its functions really.
My recommendation is immediate. You should get an Ecobee Smart Thermostat in your home. I have one for both the main floor and basement (necessity to have two furnaces in certain places in the world). The Ecobee3 Smart Thermostat is reliable, easy to install, responds quite well to remote and in-person touch controls, and is easy to manage in the home. The Ecobee3 Smart Thermostat provides a ton of value compared to it’s competitors and actually helps you conserve energy and save money your energy bills. If you’re in the market for a Smart Thermostat, consider the Ecobee3.
