The current situation of everyone being at home has put some obstacles to meeting with people for business. There has been a surge in video calling platforms such as Skype, Zoom, Google Duo to say the least. However, Wyze Cam has entered the ring to make your Wyze Cam into a real Webcam. The Wyze Cam costs around $20 USD and can be configured to run as a video conferencing service. What!? Wouldn’t that be a pretty amazing thing to do?

So I had to try this out. I have a couple of Wyze Cams in the house. They have been a great surveillance camera for the Smart Home. So, let’s get started. You will need: a Wyze Cam v2 or Wyze Cam Pan

  • Wyze Cam v2 or Wyze Cam Pan and 32 GB SD Card.

  • USB A to A Cable

  • SD Card Reader (If your PC/Mac does not have one built-in)

Converting Wyze Cam into Wyze Webcam

Now you can get started.

  • You will need to download the zipped firmware file for the Wyze Cam or Wyze Pan onto your PC/Mac. Pick a location of your choice. Just remember where to find it.
  • Insert the 32 GB SD card into your PC/Mac (or card reader). If you do not have slots in your PC/Mac for an SD Card, you can find a link to the reader above.
  • You will need to copy the demo.bin file from your PC to the 32 GB SD Card.
  • Take the 32GB SD Card out of the PC/Mac or Card Reader, and insert the 32 GB SD card under the Wyze Cam or Wyze Pan. Make sure you hear a click to ensure the SD card is properly in the Wyze Cam.
  • Next, look for the setup button on the bottom of the Wyze Cam. You will need to press this down and hold down the button while powering up the Wyze Cam. Get the power adapter plugged into the wall, and then get ready to hold the setup button. Note, the setup button is underneath the camera. The power connection (micro-USB) is at the back of the camera.
    • Press and hold the setup button.
    • Plugin the Wyze Cam/Pan. Keep the setup button depressed. Hold down the button for at least 20 seconds to be sure.
  • The light behind the camera should turn from Yellow to a mix of Yellow-Blue. The Blue light will then flash for around 4-5 minutes.
  • After waiting 4 to 5 minutes, unplug the Micro USB Power Adapter. Get your USB A-to-A cable ready.
  • Plugin the USB A-to-A cable to the back of the Wyze Cam/Pan
  • Plugin the other side of the USB A-to-A Cable to your PC/Mac.
  • You’re Done! You now have a new Wyze webcam. The PC/Mac should recognize the Wyze Cam as a Webcam in a few minutes. You can change the setting on your PC or Mac to ensure that the camera is now the default camera for a webcam.
