Jamie Siminoff is the creator of Ring doorbells and security systems. From the edge of bankruptcy, he rose to a billion-dollar valuation after securing an investment from the magnate Richard Branson. (Later on, Branson’s share was purchased by Amazon.)

Whenever I encounter a Ring product, I am consistently impressed by the extraordinary journey of the intellect behind this critical innovation.

    Here’s a little more context…

In 2020, Amazon fired four employees for snooping on their customers’ doorbell cameras. The company faced lawsuits and negligence due to the alleged hacking incident. Amazon also received a few complaints from customers regarding employees’ access to Ring video data.

Generally speaking, it’s hard to tell if someone is snooping on you through the Ring camera. I guess that’s a dilemma we all face.

Moreover, I’d love to delve deeper into this matter and hopefully help you feel safer while using the Ring devices at home.

    Let’s get to it!

Maximum Distance at Which Ring Can Detect a Person

Ring can detect a person up to 30 ft from the camera.

If you want enhanced motion detection, make sure you have the latest Ring app downloaded on your Android or iOS.

You can use the Bird’s Eye View feature to clearly see the aerial map view for motion events detected by your Ring device in your home.

Does the Ring camera turn red when someone is watching?

No, the red light blinking on your Ring camera does not mean someone is watching you.

The red light is an indication that the Infrared Light is activated. Infrared Light is activated for night vision and will also turn on when the room is too dark.

Unfortunately, this feature can’t be disabled on most Ring doorbells except for the Ring Doorbell Pro 2. If you have a camera with an IR feature, it will automatically switch on for night vision.

Watch the video below to learn other interesting features of the Ring Doorbell.

Does the blue light on the Ring camera mean someone is watching?

The blue light on your Ring camera is not an indication that someone is watching you.

The blue light flashing through the Ring camera means that the device has been configured. In other words, all the camera’s security features are activated.

Therefore, there is no need to be concerned when you see the blue light flash on your Ring camera.

What does it mean when the Ring camera is blinking?

I have made this table to show you what every light pattern means.

Can someone spy on me through my Ring camera?

Yes, it’s possible someone can spy on you through the Ring camera.

The reason is that the data being transferred from the Ring camera into the application aren’t encrypted.

In that case, it would be easier for anyone with hacking skills to spy on you or whoever enters or leaves your home. It’s possible you’ll be tricked into letting a stranger into your home by showing you a video of someone you know through the camera.

As for this case, Amazon has fixed the issue on their later versions of the Ring app.

How do you know if a camera is watching you?

There are several ways to tell if a camera is watching you. Also, we can all admit it’s a frightening experience to be watched without your knowledge.

However, you must remain calm and do the following:

    • Check the surroundings and try to spot the hidden camera.
    • Check keyholes and unusual objects where cameras might be placed or attached.
    • Use a radio frequency detector.
    • Use a flashlight to detect hidden cameras.

In 2019, over 3,000 Ring users’ login information was exposed online. This was due to a credential stuffing attack and not a breach of Ring’s databases.

The hackers utilized username and password combinations from other breaches to access Ring accounts. As individuals commonly use the same login credentials for multiple accounts, a significant number of these attacks were successful.

If Ring had implemented extra security measures that notify users about logins from unknown IP addresses, the incident could have been avoided.

Additionally, the inability to access your account’s login history makes it difficult to determine whether someone is monitoring you through Ring devices.

Many Ring users have submitted numerous reports that have made it difficult to trust the company’s security decisions.

Several individuals have stated that they were still able to access the app using their old password even after changing it, despite having two-factor authentication.

In another instance, a Reddit user reported that their Ring doorbell was sending data packets to China. The company has recognized this issue and assured users that an update will be released to address it.

Update on End-to-End Encryption from Ring

In September 2022, Ring introduced end-to-end encryption for all their devices, which is a positive move towards regaining the trust of Ring account holders. However, it’s important to take additional measures to strengthen your digital security.

A Ring doorbell can enhance home security, but there are other subtle measures to consider.

Do you know who has access to your Ring video and data?

    Other FAQs

Can Ring cameras be tampered with or disabled by intruders?

Ring cameras are designed with tamper-resistant features, and disabling them without proper access is difficult. Additionally, Ring offers device health notifications, alerting you if your camera goes offline unexpectedly.

How do Ring cameras handle power outages?

Ring cameras that are hardwired into your home’s electrical system may continue to operate during power outages. Battery-powered models have backup power, ensuring continuous operation during outages.

What happens if my internet connection goes down?

Ring cameras rely on an internet connection for remote access, but they continue to record locally when the connection is lost. Once the connection is restored, the recorded footage is uploaded to the cloud.

    Conclusion

    • While it’s hard to tell if someone is snooping through your Ring camera, I guess you just have to take precautions by learning more about the light patterns shown in the device. This way, you can tell what the Ring camera is exactly doing.
    • It’s important to get your devices from a legit store to ensure data safety. Also, call the manufacturer right away if you notice some weird things going on.
    • Still, the Ring camera is one of the best security devices that you should integrate into your smart home. You’ll definitely love the cool features of the video doorbells. So, try it!
