Gemini Live Expands to More Devices
After launching in March and quietly evolving in the background, Google is now officially rolling out camera and screen sharing in Gemini Live for Android. Initially launched for Pixel 9 and Galaxy S25 series users, Gemini Live’s screen and camera sharing features are now rolling out to all Android users with the Gemini app.
It marks a big leap forward for AI interaction on smartphones. Users can now engage with Gemini Live in much more dynamic and visual ways.

What Gemini Live Could Previously Do
Before this update, Gemini’s conversational mode only accepted basic forms of input like voice, image uploads, PDFs and YouTube video links. While that was already impressive, it didn’t allow Gemini to respond to what was happening live on your phone.
This limited the AI’s usefulness for real-time problem-solving or support. That’s where Project Astra comes in.

Project Astra Changes the Game
Due to Project Astra, Gemini Live can now “see” what’s on your phone screen during conversations. You can share your display, scroll through content, and ask questions about anything shown.
This enables contextual awareness that mirrors how you’d interact with a human. It’s a major shift from static to dynamic AI support.

Accessing Screen Sharing in Gemini Live
One of the fastest ways to begin screen sharing is through the Gemini overlay. Tap the new “Share screen with Live” chip to get started instantly.
Android will prompt you to confirm that you want to share your entire screen with Gemini. The more limited “Share one app” option has been disabled for now.

Fullscreen Experience and Notification Pill
After activating screen sharing, you’ll see a small, call-style notification pill. This sits at the top of your screen and shows a live count next to the time in your status bar.
Tapping that pill will launch the fullscreen Gemini Live experience directly. Before the AI responds, you’ll feel a subtle vibration to cue the interaction.

Another Method to Start Screen Sharing
You can also access this feature by launching Gemini Live the usual way and simply tapping the screen share button. Google has redesigned the interface slightly by replacing the larger circular buttons with smaller, sleeker pill-shaped ones.
The redesign not only looks cleaner but also makes the experience feel more seamless. It’s a subtle improvement that enhances overall usability.

Share Your Camera Feed in Real-Time
If you’re trying to get help with something in the real world, you can switch to the rear camera and show Gemini what you’re looking at. A live preview takes up most of the screen, allowing for detailed real-time interaction with your environment.
You can even switch to your selfie cam from the bottom-right corner. This adds a whole new layer of versatility to the experience.

How to Get the Best Results
To make the most of Gemini Live, Google recommends moving your phone steadily when pointing the camera at something. Quick and jerky movements can make it harder for the AI to process visual input clearly.
Smooth, stable movements help Gemini better understand objects, text, or surroundings. It’s a lot like helping someone focus during a video call.

Taking Control of the Conversation
If you need to interrupt Gemini while it’s responding, you can simply tap the screen or begin speaking. This gives you full control over the conversation flow and lets you guide the AI’s responses more naturally.
Gemini only stays active while your screen is on, keeping things easy to manage. The feature is designed to feel human and respectful of your pace.

Astra’s Big Reveal at Google I/O 2024
Project Astra was first teased back in May 2024 at Google I/O, where DeepMind shared their ambitious vision. They described it as a step toward building a universal AI agent that’s useful in everyday life.
This update reflects that mission by making AI feel more integrated and helpful. It was one of the most exciting announcements at the event.

Built on the Power of Gemini 2.0
The update is made possible by Gemini 2.0, which was revealed in December and packed with upgrades to speed, understanding, and multi-input support. Gemini 2.0 allows the AI to reason more effectively and respond to more complex interactions.
Now, those upgrades are being used in real-world features you can interact with daily. It’s where hardware and software start to blend.

Mentioned Again at the Galaxy S25 Launch
Google highlighted Project Astra once again at the Galaxy S25 launch event in January 2025. This was a strong indicator that Samsung’s flagship phone would be a launch partner for Gemini’s more advanced features.
Now, that prediction has officially become reality. Users of the Galaxy S25 are among the first to try screen sharing and camera input with Gemini Live.
First Rollout for Pixel 9 and Galaxy S25
As of now, the new Gemini Live capabilities are rolling out to Pixel 9 users as part of a one-feature Pixel Drop. Samsung Galaxy S25 users are also receiving the feature at the same time, showing strong collaboration between Google and Samsung.
This rollout will serve as a test bed before a wider release. It’s currently exclusive, but not for long.
Don’t See It Yet? Try This Trick
If you haven’t received the new feature yet, you can try force stopping the Google or Gemini app from your phone settings. After that, reopen the app, and it may trigger the feature update.
This method has worked for some users eager to explore the new screen sharing function. Just make sure you’re running the latest version of the Gemini app.

Available Soon for More Subscribers
Google has announced that the screen sharing and camera input features are now available for free to all Android users with the Gemini app. That means anyone with the $19.99/month Google One AI Premium plan will get access.
The rollout will gradually expand to compatible Android devices. It’s a promising sign that more useful AI tools are coming to more people.

Gemini Live Is Just Getting Started
With this update, Gemini Live becomes more than just a talking assistant. Whether explaining documents, identifying products, or helping with homework, it’s now more capable than ever.
This is just the beginning of what Astra and Gemini can do together. The future of interactive AI on smartphones is finally arriving.
