Water might seem like a minor element, but if it goes unchecked, it can create devastating effects within your home. Even a small, persistent drip can evolve into substantial damage, and as the familiar saying goes, more damage often leads to increased expenses.

It is prudent to regularly inspect for any water leaks, and truth be told, this task isn’t straightforward. This is precisely the reason water leak detection tools are invaluable; they identify leaks and drips so you don’t have to.

One such tool is the latest Aeotec Water Leak Sensor. With its sleek design and dual-sided conductors, it guarantees effective detection, even in narrow spaces and areas that are hard to reach.

In this article, we’ll dive into water leaks and how the Aeotec Water Leak Sensor solves it all.

    Water – The Biggest Menace

How much harm can something so mild as water do? Well, a lot.

Leaking water is a sneaky threat that should be dealt with immediately. If not, then it causes several disasters.

    Mold

I know it’s not a question, but would you allow mold in your house? Not! Leaving water leaks unaddressed does just that.

When moisture gets in cracks and corners, it brings some unwanted slimy guests who live rent-free. Fortunately, we can prevent that by finding and fixing the leak immediately.

    Electric Hazard

What do you get when you have leaks near electrical outlets or wires? A shocking combo of water and electricity. Jokes aside, the electric hazard is nothing to play with.

It poses security concerns to your family members and even causes fatalities in extreme cases.

    Weak Foundations

Leaving a leak unattended for a prolonged period can negatively impact the foundations of your house. It can cause soil erosion, concrete weakening, and risks of structural failure.

If you don’t want your house crumbling, then fix those leaks!

    Pests

Insects, I don’t know about you, but I want them as far away as possible from my house. The only thing worse than death is having your house infested by bugs.

Don’t give an open invitation to those little moisture-feeding freaks, and deal with your water leaks as soon as you find them.

    Unboxing and First Impressions

    The water leak sensor
Smooth design of the water leak sensor

Coming to the sensor, my package came with not much more than a couple of manuals and the sensor itself. The sensor is a little taller than the older version, having a weight of 1.76 ounces and standing at a height of roughly 60x36x24mm.

The sensor requires an Aeotec SmartThings Hub or some other Zigbee hub. I like the idea of having conductors on both sides.

It has small circular pins on the front side and a pair of rectangular pins on the back. Both, in my testing, conducted electricity through water easily.

Apart from the function, the design of the sensor also looks great.

    How Does It Work?

The amazing design of the water leak sensor features two conductors packed closely on both sides. The little distance between conductors makes it so that you don’t have to have a lot of water for it to sense, but a drop of water to connect the conductors in a conducive way is enough.

The sensor requires a Zigbee hub to connect to the Samsung SmartThings app to trigger alarms or show alerts on your phone whenever a leak is detected.

Setting up a ZigBee hub can be a little time-consuming, but installing the water leak sensor is fairly easy.

All you need is a ready hub and the Samsung SmartThings app. In all my testing, the sensor paired easily with the Wi-Fi.

    Temperature Sensor

The Aeotec Water Leak Sensor also provides a temperature-sensing feature.
