Bring the Outdoor Indoors
For most people living in the apartments, there are no added luxuries such as swimming pools and gardens. However, some may have a balcony or patio, providing the perfect space to bring the outdoors into your home.
Whenever the weather is nice, fireworks are nearby, or you’re enjoying a cup of coffee, your balcony view can make these moments extra special.

Clear the Junk First
Unfortunately, balconies are often the most overlooked part of home decor. People often treat them as storage spaces, though they can be the best recreational spots in your home. The first thing you should do is clear up the space there.
Consider storing old items in cardboard boxes or discarding things you no longer use. If you have an old ladder, cycle, or any other big item in there, try utilizing them in the home decor.

Flooring Upgrades
Balconies are the perfect spots to unwind after a long day at work, and to make it feel like home, you first have to change its flooring. Although most of them have porcelain, concrete, and white tile floors, here are some creative ideas to make it pop:
- Artificial Grass: Low maintenance, safe for children and pets, and eco-friendly.
- Anti-Skid Ceramic Tiles: These non-slip ceramic versions mimic materials like stone and wood and go perfectly with any home aesthetic.
- PVC Wood Planks: Wood flooring can be vulnerable to moisture retention and termite attacks; PVC wood planks work as the perfect substitute.

Add a Trellis
If you have ample space, you can add a trellis roof to make your balcony a lounging space even throughout all four seasons. You can grow climbers on the railings for a nature-inspired look.
Paint the trellis in a color that complements your outdoor furniture. I went with white for my patio since I had white folding furniture to match it.

A Flower Box for Some Whimsy
Fall is the season for mums, roses, dahlias, and pansies, making it the perfect time to set up a flower box on your balcony railings.
Usually, a 100 cm flower box can easily carry five to ten flowering pots, but this can vary from plant to plant. Search for seasonal blooms and perennials before shopping for plants for your balcony.

Woven Pendant Lamps
If you have a small balcony that does not need many light fixtures, wicker pendant lamps can be the perfect home decor accessory.
They are cheap, and their elegant designs add a sense of sophistication and warmth to the space. Besides these, you can also hang fairy lights on the wall for a whimsical touch.

Add Furniture
Remember, you don’t have to overcomplicate your decor when it comes to furniture. Stick to simple and functional pieces, such as chairs, tables, small sofas, bean bags, and cushions.
Select furniture made from wrought iron, resin wicker, plastic, or teak and arrange it in the center or along the side walls of your balcony. I personally prefer wicker tables and chairs for outdoor, and some knitted throws in the fall for some added comfort.

Some Fabric for Draping
If you live in a crowded area, you can use draping as a privacy sheet for your balcony. If you want foolproof security without breaking the bank, heavy linen or other deep-colored fabrics can do the job.
Consider installing latticework on your balcony and draping fabric over it for a more permanent solution.

Bamboo Screens
A bamboo screen or decorative lattice is another great option for protecting yourself from harsh rays, prying eyes, and strong winds.
While bamboo screens may not withstand harsh weather, they can help provide privacy. Remember to regularly check and maintain your bamboo screen to ensure it is in good condition.

A Storage Bench
The star of the show is this functional seating option. The storage compartment serves a dual purpose: it can store your stuff and also allow you to lay back and enjoy the view.
If you’ve used your balcony for storage in the past, consider upgrading to a storage bench to neatly organize your outdoor space.

Wall Sculptures
You can never go wrong with art. If you have a small space and find it difficult to fit all your big inspirations, just know a gorgeous art piece will fix it all.
You can put a contemporary piece, a porcelain statue, a fiber one, or anything that speaks your style. But you’ll need to take extra care of them and protect them from dust and debris.

Using Wire Mesh to Create a Pet-Friendly Space
If you have a clumsy cat or an active dog, it’s better to have a protective mesh wrapped over the balcony to prevent accidents.
If you’re concerned about the mesh’s appearance, you could install it behind potted plants or other balcony decorations. For a wholesome look, you can hang paper lamps, lanterns, sun catchers, or origami art.

A Vertical Garden
A vertical garden is a fantastic idea for maximizing your balcony’s space by growing plants upwards rather than outwards. You can grow your own herbs, vegetables, or even small fruits on your balcony.
Choose lightweight containers suitable for vertical gardening, such as hanging baskets, wall-mounted planters, or tiered shelves. And make sure your containers have drainage holes to prevent root rot.

Add a Swing or a Hammock
This could be a great way to relax and unwind after a hectic day. A hammock or a swing chair can also provide extra seating for guests and friends.
When choosing materials for your swings, opt for weather-resistant materials that can withstand outdoor conditions. You can also add cushions for added comfort.

September Plants for Your Fall Garden
Incorporating fall plants into your balcony can bring a vibrant touch of nature to your apartment. September is the perfect time to add seasonal favorites like mums, pansies, and ornamental kale to create a cozy outdoor space.
These plants thrive in cooler temperatures, making your balcony beautiful and resilient for the fall season. If you want to learn more, then check out “Top September Plants for Your Fall Garden” for inspiration.
